NO. 200 - Just Make Art | Abstract Neo Expressionists Oil Painting

NO. 200 – Just Make ART 12x16 Oil & Cold Wax Palette Knife • Spoon Handle • Groove Tool Sometimes the best paintings begin with absolutely no plan. For No. 200, I walked into the studio with a blank canvas and no concept in mind. While mixing colors, I asked YouTube Music AI to build me a playlist of hyper improvisational jazz, and one track immediately caught my attention: "Machine Gun" by Peter Brötzmann (1970). The music was raw, unpredictable, chaotic, and completely unconcerned with convention. Instead of trying to paint something, I tried to paint the feeling of that music. Every palette knife stroke, every groove carved into the oil and cold wax, every layer became an improvisation—responding to the last mark without worrying about the next one. The bold black lines were actually the final addition, applied with the edge of a palette knife to tie the entire composition together with one final burst of energy. This painting became a reminder of something I've believed for a long time: Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop thinking and just make art.
