Atlas Mountain Race & Adventure 2025

The Atlas Mountain Race (AMR) has been an event I have wanted to take on for many years, as well as an opportunity to visit a new country that looks truly incredible. This year, I finally had the chance. Despite thorough preparation, extensive research, and asking key people important questions, the reality was not quite what I had expected. The route covers 1,300km with 22,000m of elevation, traversing the Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains. For those at the front, it is a race; for others further back, the goal is simply to complete the course. I approached the event with realistic expectations, aiming to enjoy the experience and reach the finish. However, I hadn’t fully appreciated just how much of the route would involve hike-a-bike. The climb over the Telouet Pass was largely rideable, but the descent was covered in snow and deep drifts, forcing a long section of walking. I remained in good spirits until later the next day, but the relentless carrying sections made me question why I was there and what I wanted to achieve. Before facing what would have been a gruelling 9km hike-a-bike, I chose to scratch from the race, skipping a large section before rejoining for the final 300km. This part was far more enjoyable—though I was fortunate to have relatively fresh legs, which may not have been the case for others. Hearing finishers talk about a 20km desert sand section that was barely rideable this year, along with colonial road sections involving extended walking, reaffirmed my decision. Morocco and the Atlas Mountains are incredible, offering fantastic riding and incredibly welcoming people. However, for anyone considering taking part, forget the polished videos of riders powering through—be prepared to spend a significant amount of time off the bike.
