Overnight winter woodland camp. Helm Compact 1 tent. Campfire food
My first winter camp and it was a cold one. I’m back down Paul’s aka @WanderingMonck woodland for an overnighter. Walking into camp I felt that lovely sensation of stress melting away. I was the first to arrive and started to set up my sleeping system. I was in the Helm Compact 1 tent and found a nice patch under a clearing in the canopy. Paul arrived soon after and was also tenting. We got the campfire going, which was welcome as the temperature started to drop. We decided to cook our tea early and had burgers and the biggest spuds known to man. Got to love campfire food! Paul also had a new bit of kit to try out in the form of a campfire coffee percolator. It worked really well and the coffee tasted much better than my usual sachets. With the lanterns lit and the fire roaring, we chatted for hours and even managed to get a podcast recorded, see below. Early to bed and I was really warm in the Vango Nitestar 450. However, I'm a side sleeper that likes to spread out and the mummy bags are very restrictive. In warmer weather, I use it as a quilt but that wasn't possible this time round without bringing tons of kit. I think I'm going to revert back to hammock camping as I seem to be more comfortable and have fewer instances of broken sleep. However, the night was very peaceful and morning brought more coffee and more food than necessary but our excuse was that it was freezing. Definitely will do more winter camping. The woodland looked gorgeous without the leaves on the trees. Can't wait to get back out again! Into The Woods Podcast: After a long overdue period, Paul finally managed to record his podcast interview with me. Paul started his podcast (Into The Woods Podcast) back in the summer of 2023, where he first interviewed Luke aka @wildstagadventures. In the episode, we talk about my passion for the outdoors and how I discovered (and manage) agoraphobia. A proper 'fire-side' chat with two blokes in the woods. Go check it out - Season 1, Episode 2 An Interview with Higgsy Bear Outdoors, available where you normally get your podcasts from.
