Le campane di Sernio (SO)

The first record of the existence of the church in Sernio is contained in a document written by the canons of Mazzo in 1257. The narratives of the following centuries are insufficient to establish the dimensions of the temple, of which no evidence remains. In the mid-15th century, the church began to enjoy a certain autonomy, thanks to the stable presence of a rector who administered certain sacraments. In 1614, the bishop asked the community to build a new church to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. The population collected many donations, both from the nobility and emigrants, but also from ordinary people who had escaped the plague. The church was completed within a few years and was consecrated on 6 June 1681, after being established as a parish church. d' - e' - f' sharp - g' - a' The slender bell tower houses five bells in the musical scale of D major. The old bell tower was built in 1613, replacing the medieval bell. In 1656, a new bell was added to the concert, while in the 19th century, two of the originals were recast because they were cracked. The dissonant concert of four bells was removed from the tower and recast into the new five bells, made by the famous Pruneri in 1901. The new bells weighing a total of 36 quintals are considered by leading experts to be among the most beautiful bells made in our country, a sign of the great artistry acquired over the centuries. A friend of mine rang them for a very long time, allowing a high quality audio and video recording. The church was equipped in the 18th century with fine works of art, such as the paintings and silverware kept in the ancient sacristy. The organ, enclosed in an elaborately carved sound box, was also built in 1790. Next to the church is the Oratory of St Peter, built in 1769, and a medieval ossuary.
