The 'Harmless' French Tractor Germany Captured In Thousands And Used Against Its Makers
Renault UE Chenillette — the most-produced French armoured vehicle of 1940. France built over 5,000 of them. Germany captured 3,000 in six weeks and turned them on the nation that built them. Designed as an unarmed supply tractor, the Renault UE carried no gun and wore armour thin enough that a rifle round could perforate it. Nobody bothered to destroy them when France collapsed. The Wehrmacht stamped them with the Balkenkreuz and sent them to war — towing PaK guns into Russia, launching 28cm Wurfrahmen rockets through the Balkans, and fighting as Beutepanzer self-propelled guns in Italy and Normandy. Then Major Alfred Becker converted forty of them into command vehicles for the 21st Panzer Division. On D-Day, June 1944, they rolled out to meet the Allied landings. Among those Allied forces were Free French soldiers who had trained on the exact same vehicle four years earlier. A French tractor. A German weapon. The same machine, two flags, three continents.
