Flashback #25 1963. This photo shows the aftermath of a natural disaster that occurred 55 kilometers from the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan. The July heat triggered a mudflow—the outburst of the moraine lake Zharsay in the upper reaches of the Issyk River. During the day, the mudflow swept through the Issyk Gorge, burying the picturesque Issyk Lake and the people relaxing there. By nightfall, the natural dam had burst, and water from the lake, along with rocks and mud, rushed down the valley toward the village of Issyk, destroying about two hundred houses along the way.
