THE STORY OF SAMAEL: MASTERS OF BLACK METAL THE ORIGINS (1987–1990): BORN IN DARKNESS Samael was formed in Sion, Switzerland, in 1987 by two brothers: Vorph (Michael Locher) – guitarist and vocalist Xytras / Xy (Alexandre Locher) – drummer and keyboardist In their early days, they were just teenagers obsessed with extreme bands like Bathory, Celtic Frost, and Venom. Their goal was clear: to create a dark, blasphemous, and primitive metal, inspired by Satanism and the occult. In 1988, they released their first home-made EP: “Medieval Prophecy,” a raw, cavernous work filled with funereal atmospheres. The European underground took note: something evil was coming out of Switzerland. 🔥 2. SATANIC ERA (1991–1992): THE BLACK TRILOGY ● Worship Him (1991) – The Blasphemous Debut Their first official album was released by Osmose Productions, becoming one of the first black metal albums on the continent. Sound: Raw Slow Funereal Rhythms Completely Satanic Lyrics This was the black metal era before Norway exploded onto the scene. ● Blood Ritual (1992) – Ritualistic Satanism A more elaborate album, with heavier riffs and themes inspired by rituals, black magic, and Luciferian philosophy. It marked their musical growth. ⚡ 3. PASSAGE: THE SHIFT IN BLACK METAL (1996) This is where the great turning point occurs. Xy abandons the acoustic drum kit and switches to using: programmed drums synthesizers samplers This completely transformed his sonic identity. Passage (1996) This album blended: Black metal Industrial music Cosmic atmospheres Philosophical and spiritual lyrics It is considered a masterpiece of modern extreme metal. Songs like “Rain,” “Jupiterian Vibe,” and “Moonskin” marked a new era.
