North America's LAST Mainline Budd RDC
Located in Northern Ontario, is the VIA Rail Sudbury to White River train route. This isn't just any typical passenger train, it's home to the last mainline Budd RDC passenger trains in regular scheduled service in North America. Known simply as "the Budd car", the service provides a vital link to many remote locations, only accessible by train. The Budd Rail Diesel Car, also known as RDC's, are self-propelled diesel railcars, built by the Budd Company. 398 of these cars were built between 1949 and 1962, in five different interior configurations. Today, only five of these cars are still in operable service for VIA Rail Canada, and are only operated on this route in Canada. Several other tourist railroads operate Budd RDC's, as well as the very seldom use by the Westside Express Service (WES) in Portland, Oregon. In this video, we'll follow train 186, running between White River and Sudbury. Today's train consists of three RDC units; 6219, 6105, & 6250. Dating back to the mid 1950's, these RDC's were originally operated by the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railroads. I chased the train from Ramsey, to Sudbury, catching it three times enroute. At the end, you'll see some yard operations in Sudbury, as the crew switches the three units into the storage yard for the night. All locations listed in video.
