One of the darkest pages of the Second World War. On July 16 and 17, 1942, the Vichy government ordered the arrest of 13,000 Jews. Among them were 4,000 children. French police under Vichy orders organized this roundup. Packed into requisitioned buses, 13,000 Jews were taken to the Vélodrome d'Hiver before being sent to the camps. The Vélodrome d'Hiver, the site of cycling jousts and famous for its "6 Days of the Winter," became a transit camp for the death, the center of Jewish persecution in France. They spent four days of suffering there in atrocious and inhumane conditions. "We were so crowded together because there were so many of us. We had nothing to eat or drink," they recount. They have not forgotten the lights that never went out, the loudspeakers that screamed names incessantly. The few survivors of this mass extermination bear witness in this moving documentary by Gilles Nadeau and Jacques Duquesne. Rachel Jeagle, Rebecca Cukierman, and many others were children. Each one recounts with great emotion the loss of their mother, their sister, and more. They haven't forgotten the playgrounds "forbidden to dogs and Jews," or the imposed curfew. Among the speakers, lawyer and specialist in the deportation of Jews from France, Serge Klarsfeld, journalist and writer Maurice Rajsfus, and historian Jean-Marc Berlière, bear witness to the heavy silence that weighed on these tragic events. 👉 Also watch on Notre Histoire: From Compromise to Resistance: How Did the Church React to the Holocaust?    • De la compromission à la résistance : Comm...   The Klaus Barbie Trial: When France Judges a Crime Against Humanity    • Le procès de Klaus Barbie : quand la Franc...   Berlin 1936: How Hitler Turned the Olympics into a Propaganda Weapon    • Berlin 1936 : Comment Hitler a transformé ...   👉 Discover our playlist dedicated to the Second World War    • Playlist   This documentary was produced for educational purposes and may contain images that may offend some viewers.
