Seijaku is not merely quiet. It is the sacred stillness that lives beneath all sound, the silence that gives every note its meaning, the deep composure that the mind discovers only after it has stopped trying to arrive anywhere. In Zen practice, Seijaku is considered one of the essential aesthetic principles — alongside wabi-sabi and yūgen — and it points toward something paradoxical: the most profound peace is not the absence of activity, but the unshakable stillness that remains even within it. A waterfall at the edge of a quiet garden is Seijaku. A single bell rung once in an empty temple is Seijaku.
