Stop Overthinking It: 4Runner Transmission Drain & Fill MADE EASY
Doing a transmission drain and fill on your Toyota 4Runner doesn’t need to be complicated or intimidating. In this video, I walk you through the entire process from start to finish - showing you the tools, fluid, torque specs, and real-world tips so you can do it at home with confidence. *What I used to do this job: Toyota Transmission Fluid ATF-WS https://amzn.to/4aeQwLW Fluid Pump (same company but now upgraded version): https://amzn.to/3XaBDmr Transmission Pan Crush Washers: https://amzn.to/43Skdi8 *Scangauge 2 (for reading Trans Temp): https://amzn.to/4obMmYw 24mm 6 Point Socket (3/8" drive): https://amzn.to/48mfAhQ 24mm 6 Point Socket (1/2" drive): https://amzn.to/4rhgWD1 Using Your OBD II Port If You Do Not Have a Scanner or Gauge: 1. Turn the engine off and connect a jumper wire between pins 4 and 13 of the OBDII connector. Take a moment to verify you are using the correct terminals before proceeding. 2. Start the vehicle and make sure every accessory is turned off — no AC, lights, wipers, etc. 3. If the jumper is connected properly, you’ll notice multiple warning lights blinking on the dash. That confirms the vehicle has entered maintenance mode. 4. With your foot on the brake, move the shifter from Park into Neutral, then back to Park several times. 5. After that, return the shifter to Park. Then, keeping your foot on the brake, shift from Park → Neutral, and quickly move between Neutral and Drive until the “D” indicator stays solid. Once it does, place the shifter back in Park and remove the jumper wire. 6. The vehicle is now in fluid level check mode. Let the engine idle while the transmission warms up: Below ~104°F (40°C): the “D” indicator will be OFF At ~104°F (40°C): the “D” indicator will turn solid (this is the correct temperature to check level) Above ~113°F (45°C): the “D” indicator will flash, meaning the fluid is too warm for measurement Additional Notes: -Reconfirm pin locations before jumping — incorrect terminals can damage modules -Some scan tools can enter this mode without a jumper -Always work on a level surface -Wear gloves and eye protection **Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. I’m not your mechanic — just a guy who loves turning wrenches and occasionally learning the hard way. If you follow along and something goes boom, bendy, or smoky, that’s on you! Always double-check your work, verify procedures, torque specs, and fluid requirements for your specific vehicle and model year. Consult your vehicle’s manual.
