This video, following the previous ones (   • Óleo-Pastel 1; Características.   and    • Óleo-Pastel 2; Plástica y Aplicación.  ), which first covered the characteristics and peculiarities of oil pastels and the second demonstrated their application on cardboard and wood surfaces, focuses on creating a simple image by combining oil pastels, applied directly and diluted with turpentine, on sulfated cardboard (SBS - Solid Bleached Sulphate paper) using brushes of various types. The materials used were a 24-piece oil pastel set from the Japanese brand "MINISO," marketed as "Oil Painting Sticks." Oil pastels are a poorly understood and often overlooked material, frequently confined to the school setting, despite possessing a potential for artistic expression that should be appreciated for its inherent beauty. It's a material prone to confusion, starting with its name "OIL-PASTEL," when it's neither strictly oil nor pastel. Its true classification lies with "WAX" materials, from which it differs by its oily component, making it dilutable with turpentine. Furthermore, the chemical manipulation of this material now offers the possibility of dissolving it in water. At the base of all colored materials lies a fundamental ingredient: pigment. In its simplest form, this takes the shape of the familiar "pastels," also known as "dry pastels," which simply contain gum arabic as a binder. Waxes, or crayons, however, are pigments condensed with wax and presented in stick form. It is essential to understand the wide variety of wax paints available, among which a familiar material is colored pencils, which were developed to be water-soluble, as well as wax paints, which are designed to be watercolor-compatible. Oil pastels are wax-based materials with an added oil, a non-air-drying oil, which is distinct from the linseed oil component of oil paint that dries through exposure to air and oxidation. Due to their viscosity and adhesion, oil pastels can be applied directly to a wide variety of papers, cardboards, and canvases with satisfactory results, even on rigid supports such as wood, metal, and glass. Therefore, oil pastels are not oil paints, although they are oil-based. This allows them to be dissolved with turpentine or mineral spirits, which requires a surface of limited absorbency such as coated paper, coated card, or Schoeller paper. A canvas prepared for acrylic or oil paint can also be used, and various types of canvas paper are well-suited to this technique. The video covers the entire application, blending, and correction process step by step, highlighting the advantages of using turpentine or mineral spirits on the material applied to the coated cardboard surface. The next video will use another version of Oil Pastel, from the CRETACOLOR brand, "AquaStic," which is a WATERCOLOR-SUITABLE OIL-PASTEL. In this case, it will be applied and diluted with water on watercolor paper that can withstand the wet application of the technique.
