The Judea of ​​Purísima del Rincón is a centuries-old tradition celebrated annually during Holy Week in the municipality of Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, Mexico. This cultural event combines popular theater, music, and crafts and was started in 1872 by renowned local artist Hermenegildo Bustos. The performance focuses on the figure of Judas Iscariot and his betrayal of Jesus. During the holy days, residents participate in reenactments that include masked characters such as Judas, the Ranchero, the Oriental, Malco, Time, the Greater Devil, and the Lesser Devil. These masks, crafted by local artisans from colorín wood, add a satirical tone to the performance. The festival unfolds as follows: Holy Wednesday: The first Judea parade takes place, with approximately 300 participants parading through the streets wearing their masks and traditional clothing. Holy Thursday: At night, "The Kiss of Judas" is reenacted, where Judas kisses Jesus on the cheek before handing him over. Good Friday: In the morning, the judgment, the Stations of the Cross, and the crucifixion of Jesus are reenacted. In the afternoon, around 3:00 p.m., the culminating moment of Judea occurs: the final persecution of Judas, culminating in his hanging in the main garden of Purísima del Rincón.
