The Legend of Ourique Legend has it that, on the night before the Battle of Ourique, King Afonso Henriques left the camp to pray. While asking God for courage and protection for his men, he is said to have had a vision of Christ on the cross, who promised him victory and announced that Portugal was destined to become a great Christian nation.
