Voortrekker Celebrations
(2 Jan 1939) The commanders converge on Pretoria where a camp has been pitched near the site for the memorial monument. A great march past is held, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides participating and bearing the old republican flags. The first stone of the monument is laid by three women descendants of the first pioneers. Covered wagons and occupants. Nairobi Voortrekkers - Sir Robert Brooke Popham, the Governor of Kenya, arrives in an ox drawn wagon at the camp of the Dutch settlers on the occasion of the great Voortrek. The governor opens a hall to commemorate the trek and the dress conforms with the South African style.
