Tettenhall College: a hidden gem near Birmingham

Yesterday, I visited a remarkable hidden gem near Birmingham. The school combines strong academic results with a highly structured environment, but what impressed me most was the genuine care shown to every student. The admissions team and senior leadership were exceptional. They seemed to know every student's background, journey, strengths, and aspirations in remarkable detail. Their level of engagement and personal knowledge was truly impressive and reflected a culture where every student matters. When speaking with Sixth Form students, one message came through consistently: the school is genuinely international and welcoming. Students described how easy it is to make friends, integrate into the community, and feel a sense of belonging. With small class sizes, each student receives highly personalised academic and pastoral support. One particularly distinctive feature is the compulsory Life Skills programme for senior students. Topics range from practical everyday tasks—such as changing a plug, replacing a car tyre, and opening a bank account—to navigating important life experiences like a first date. These are the kinds of real-world skills that many young people, especially international students, greatly benefit from developing alongside their academic studies. Perhaps the most powerful illustration of the school's impact came from a student from Shanghai. When he joined in Year 10, his English proficiency was very limited. Today, as a Year 13 student, he has secured offers from Princeton University and University College London (UCL). More striking than the offers themselves is the confidence, maturity, and leadership presence he now demonstrates. His transformation offers a glimpse into the strength of the support, guidance, and opportunities the school provides. Outstanding schools are not always the loudest. Sometimes, they are quietly transforming lives, one student at a time.
