This Deputy Head has been at the school for 15 years and spent three years working in China. He even speaks fluent Chinese. When asked what Chinese students gain most from studying at a traditional British boarding school . He said Chinese students can learn to have their own voices, and learn the ability to express themselves more confidently and independently. He explained that the word “education” comes from Latin — educere, meaning “to lead out” or “to draw out.” In its original sense, education is not about filling students’ minds with information, but about drawing out their inner potential and helping them grow. From his experience, Chinese education tends to focus on teachers imparting knowledge to students, while in the British boarding school system, the approach is the opposite: teachers guide, inspire, and help students discover their own abilities. And that, he said, is the true meaning of education.
