Why do we get offended on behalf of others? Are we turning empathy into an act of egocentrism? In this excerpt, we reflect on a ridiculous but increasingly common phenomenon on social media and in everyday life: vicarious offense. It all started with a comment accusing us of being "sexist" simply for using the word vulva. The curious (and absurd) thing is that the women present at the table weren't offended at all; on the contrary, they actively participated in the conversation. So, why does a man decide to get offended on behalf of women who aren't offended? Who gave him the title of savior? We must learn to distinguish and set clear boundaries. Get offended when there is a real intention to harm, to dehumanize someone, when someone is being belittled, when your rights are taken away or opportunities are closed to you. But please, stop getting offended over trivial things. When you choose to take on the pain or discomfort of people who are perfectly at peace, you're not saving the world or defending any just cause: you're simply imposing YOUR sensibilities on everyone else's.
