Polymer Science and Processing 05: other polymerization techniques
Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course is an introduction to polymer science and provides a broad overview over various aspects of polymers, from synthetic methods, via polymer physics and materials properties to processing into products. The overarching aim of the course is to connect molecular properties and chain architecutres of polymers with resulting macroscopic properties. This chapter introduces other synthetic techniques to make polymers. We learn that both cationic and anionic species can be used to initiate polymerization of vinyl monomers. Especially anionic polymerization is highly relevant since it provides living characteristics that can be used to precisely control molecular weight, to synthesize polymers with extremely narrow chain length distributions, and to make block copolymers. We discuss approaches on how to create living characteristics in radical polymerisation and briefly look at Ziegler-Natta catalysis.
