Plants from these regions need repotting and soil replacement when grown in Germany. The potted citrus plants from these regions have thick, water-retentive soil due to the local climate. This type of soil is more suitable for citrus plants growing in Mediterranean climates. However, the German climate is completely different from these regions, especially in spring, autumn, and winter. In German winters, these plants rarely survive outdoors and need to be moved to sunrooms, cool rooms, etc. If the potting soil has a high water retention capacity, it may cause root rot. In Germany, these plants typically grow outdoors during spring and autumn. However, due to the frequent rainy seasons, if the potting soil has excellent water retention, the roots of citrus plants can easily remain in a constantly damp environment, leading to root rot. When growing citrus plants in Germany, it's crucial to ensure good drainage; it's better to err on the side of dryness rather than overwatering. My own potting mix includes a significant amount of perlite to ensure good drainage. Occasionally, I add a very small amount of coconut coir to prevent the soil from drying out completely. When growing citrus plants in Germany—whether purchased online or from a physical nursery—they often originate from Italy (or regions like Spain and southern France). Plants imported from these areas require repotting and a change of soil when grown in Germany. Due to the local climate, the potting soil used for citrus plants in those regions is heavy and retains a significant amount of moisture; this type of soil is well-suited for citrus growth in a Mediterranean climate. However, the climate in Germany is vastly different, particularly during spring, autumn, and winter. In German winters, these plants rarely survive outdoors and must be moved to a sunroom or a cool greenhouse. If the potting soil retains too much moisture, it can lead to root rot. During the German spring and autumn, these plants are typically kept outdoors; however, frequent rainy and overcast weather means that highly water-retentive soil can easily keep the root system damp constantly, again making root rot a likely risk. When growing citrus plants in Germany, ensuring good drainage is essential—it is better to keep the soil on the drier side than too wet. I mix my own potting soil, adding plenty of perlite to ensure proper drainage, and occasionally include a very small amount of coconut coir to prevent the soil from drying out completely.
