Ants in the garden have been busily transporting aphids onto these new shoots, causing significant damage. To prevent the harm caused by ants, I employed a physical barrier method: I cleared away any nearby plant branches that touched the cherry tree and wrapped a strip of tape—sticky side facing outward—around the lower part of the trunk. This prevents the ants from crossing the tape and carrying aphids to the new shoots. I purchased several citrus plants this year; the bergamot (Buddha's Hand), in particular, has a rich fragrance that attracts ants, which tend to gnaw on its flower buds. Drawing on the success I had with the cherry tree last year, I applied this same "tape method" to the bergamot plant to keep the ants at bay. Advantages of using tape: It is a purely physical method that leaves no chemical residue. Consequently, it does not harm the ants unless they attempt to force their way across and get stuck. When the tape loses its stickiness, it is very easy to replace with a fresh strip. Disadvantages of using tape: You must ensure that all potential pathways for the ants are blocked—including the main trunk, support stakes, branches from other plants, and nearby walls and so on. The method relies on the tape's adhesive quality; repeated exposure to rain causes the stickiness to fade over time, so the tape requires timely replacement rather than offering a permanent, "set-it-and-forget-it" solution.
