The Frankfurt City Talks series brings together academia, politics, culture, and civil society in an open dialogue about key societal challenges. With the event "Defensive Democracy: Opportunities and Limits of Banning Political Parties," we aim to contribute a nuanced perspective to the highly topical discussion surrounding resilient democracy and how to deal with political forces that challenge the fundamental values ​​of our democratic society. The evening will focus on the question of whether, and under what constitutional, political, and societal conditions, banning a democratically elected, right-wing nationalist party can be considered a legitimate measure. Based on the normative foundations of the ban on political parties enshrined in the German Basic Law, we would like to discuss the significant legal hurdles and theoretical tensions surrounding this measure – between pluralism and self-defense, between freedom of expression and the protection of the free democratic order.
