106 DNI ZMIENIŁO DZIEWCZYNY W STARCÓW. ŻOŁNIERZE BYLI WSTRZĄŚNIĘCI ICH WIDOKIEM
Volhynia, Inka, the Ulma family🎥 • KOŚCI PAMIĘTAJĄ WSZYSTKO. MEDYK SĄDOWY ODK... May 1945. In a barn near Volary, American soldiers find 118 extremely emaciated women. Thus ends one of the longest death marches of World War II. I describe it in my book "Doctors for Killing" https://www.znak.com.pl/p/lekarze-od-... Harry Morgan and Kurt Klein get into a jeep and head in the indicated direction. Little do they know that they are about to see something they will remember for the rest of their lives. They reach a long building resembling a barn. Inside and around it lie women so emaciated that the soldiers cannot tell their ages. The medical officer is convinced he is looking at men in their fifties. She asks one of the people she finds how old she is. The answer is: seventeen. Who are these women? Where do they come from? And why are they here, just a few kilometers from the homes of the residents of Volary? They are prisoners of the German Gross-Rosen concentration camp. On January 29, 1945, they set out from Grünberg—present-day Zielona Góra. For 106 days, they walk through snow, mud, frost, and one village after another. Those who lose strength are killed or left by the road. When Gerda Weissmann asks one of the SS men where they are taking them, she hears an answer that reveals the true purpose of the march: "We have no destination. Our goal is for you all to die along the way." Joanna Lamparska reaches Volary and juxtaposes the contemporary landscape with archival films shot in May 1945. He locates the place where soldiers discovered the women, visits the victims' cemetery, and analyzes footage showing events that the town's residents might have preferred to remain silent about for years. A few days after liberation, the Americans discover a mass grave. They then force the residents of Volar to walk past the recovered bodies and participate in the burial of the murdered women. Archival footage shows children watching with curiosity, women averting their gaze, and men standing with stony faces. Did they really not know anything beforehand? The film also tells the story of 25-year-old Fela Scheps, whose photograph becomes one of the most moving testimonies to the tragedy, as well as Gerda Weissmann and Kurt Klein—a prisoner who nearly dies at the end of a march and a soldier who is among the first to reach out to her. This is a story about 106 days of hunger and fear. About people watching from windows. About soldiers who arrive too late for many of the women. And about a meeting that, amidst death, gives rise to an extraordinary love. Was forcing the residents of Volary to witness the sacrifices a necessary testament to the truth? Or a form of collective punishment? Or perhaps a last-ditch attempt to break down the wall of silence? 👍 Like this post if you believe such testimonies should reach more viewers. 🔔 Subscribe to HiHistory—a channel about the secrets of history, forgotten places, the mysteries of World War II, and the fates of people whose voices still demand to be heard.
