Mississippi River Road Trip (Part 1) Levee Bike Ride Tour

In today's video, Free Tours by Foot New Orleans guides Robi and Andrew take you on one of the best bike rides in New Orleans, via the bike path that runs along the Mississippi River. The riverfront ride shows a different side of New Orleans, including South Louisiana's nature, its plantation past, and its industrial present. The ride begins at the Tree of Life in Audubon Park, one of the most impressive live oak trees in Louisiana. We first meet the river in Audubon Riverfront Park, better known to locals as The Fly. From there, the river brings us to some unexpected waterfront housing, the site of a Civil War fort, and the top recommendation for New Orleans travelers from the vintage Green Book - the road guide for black travelers in the late days of segregation. Beyond New Orleans's city limits, the path continues to historic Rivertown (likely the place where French colonists made their claim on Louisiana), Destrehan Plantation (a key site in the largest slave revolt in US history), and the town of Norco (a modern company town named for its oil refining company). The trail ends at the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a huge work of engineering responsible for keeping the Mississippi from flooding New Orleans.
