In this passage, Joseph is warned in a dream that Herod wants to kill baby Jesus and that he and Mary must flee to Egypt. Then Herod discovers that the Magi had been plotting against him, he's been outwitted by them, and he takes vengeance on all the children in Bethlehem, who are age two and under; then, we have Joseph being given a message and another dream, that it's safe to return back to Judea. This passage really sets up Jesus as the new Moses. This is a motif that works its way all throughout the Gospel of Matthew. And it's something I hit on in the introductory video I did a few weeks ago. If you study the Gospel of Matthew, you will find numerous examples of Jesus being connected with Moses and where Jesus's teaching is set up to supersede the teaching of Moses. And so here we have, even in his birth story, as his life is threatened, Jesus is being connected back to Moses and the early chapters of Exodus.
