This documentary is a broad and profound exploration of the history of Bacău, a seemingly discreet city, but with historical roots that go back to the first centuries of our era. Far from the classic history textbooks, Bacău reveals itself here as a space of economic, cultural and spiritual confluence, decisively shaped by the Bistrița River, one of the vital arteries of medieval Moldova. The story begins around the Royal Court and the Precista Church, places that mark the apogee of Bacău during the time of Stephen the Great, when the city becomes a strategic commercial center, a royal customs and a meeting point for merchants from Poland, Transylvania, northern Moldova and the Subcarpathian area. Here, goods were gathered, taxes were collected and the fate of essential trade routes for the medieval Moldavian state was decided. The documentary brings to the fore historical figures deeply connected to Bacău: – Alexandrel, the son of Stephen the Great, who lived in the Royal Court and whose disappearance marks the beginning of the decline of the medieval city; – Vasile Alecsandri, whose childhood and birth are linked to Bacău, the city that offered him the first landmarks of a settled and harmonious life; – George Bacovia, the symbolist poet for whom Bacău becomes a source of atmosphere, melancholy and literary identity, from the bell tower and the Main Street to the memorial house; – Mircea Cancicov, a leading political and economic figure of interwar Romania, a son of Bacău, whose life reflects both the peak and the tragedies of Romanian history in the 20th century. As the route progresses, the documentary follows the urban transformation of the city, from Strada Mare – the commercial and social center of interwar Bacău – to the Administrative Palace, the municipal theater, cultural buildings and major urban interventions from the communist period. Not only the buildings are explained, but also the mentalities, social customs, promenade life, café culture, period photography and the dynamics of the ethnic communities that lived here: Romanians, Jews, Armenians, Catholics and Orthodox. The documentary does not avoid sensitive moments either: deliberate destruction, forced political decisions, the disappearance of heritage and the way in which a city loses or regains its identity depending on the era. Everything is told calmly, documented, with respect for the facts and for the memory of the place. This is not just a film about Bacău, but a lesson on how the identity of a city is built, lost and recovered.
