Rye (The Grove) Level Crossing, East Sussex

Official name: Grove Road Level Crossing Date filmed: Friday the 10th of May 2024 Videos filmed at: 11:43 | 11:57 Route: The Marshlink Line Rye (RYE) Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: The Grove, Rye (TN31 7NB) This is the Easterly of the two level crossings in the East Sussex town of Rye, both located either side of the railway station on the unelectrified Marshlink Line serving the town. Like with the other level crossing, this one also has four alarms which are rather peculiarly fitted within the barrier pedestals. These ones are quite quiet unlike the other four at the other level crossing, and this is a less-busy environment at most times being a semi-residential cut-through road. The LED wigwags here date back to towards the end of 2017, and the current set of barriers and alarms weren't fitted for over another year. Two lowerings feature in this video, both taken from the same side due to the position of the sun and me not wanting to risk copyright issues with a radio being played nearby. Fortunately, no music could be heard while filming! The train off of Ashford arrived on-time, but the other off of Eastbourne was ten minutes late due to the signalling problems earlier in the day still having a knock-on effect throughout with trains out of sync as they share the much busier East Coastway route and the bottleneck through Hastings. These trains are bodily identical to the staple Diesel Multiple Unit of the Class 170, but feature a specific coupler that allows them to run in tandem with the 'Electrostar' members of Southern's fleet in an emergency.
