Eyelid inflammation, dandruff at the base of the eyelashes, eye pain, red eyes, and itching or burning are some of the most common symptoms. See symptoms for more information. It is an eye disease that can occur at any age and in both sexes. Chronic blepharitis is often overlooked; however, it is often a frustrating condition due to its chronic and cyclical nature. It is a disease whose periods of worsening alternate with asymptomatic periods. In advanced cases, eyelid changes are common due to scarring that forms over the years, which can alter the position of the eyelashes (trichiasis) and cause serious discomfort. Blepharitis is a condition that can affect both the upper and lower eyelids. People with oily skin, dandruff, and dry eyes are more susceptible to blepharitis. There are several causes of blepharitis. The condition is generally related to the colonization of the eyelids by bacteria from the normal skin flora. This colonization is exacerbated by increased oil production in this area due to dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which produce the lipid layer of the tear film. Blepharitis can present in several forms, including dry eye, conjunctivitis, hordeolum, chalazion, and in more advanced cases, trichiasis and even corneal ulcers. For blepharitis, treatment depends on whether we are treating an acute form of the disease or preventing it. Blepharitis can be staphylococcal or seborrheic, and while the former requires antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, seborrheic blepharitis typically requires anti-inflammatories and eyelid cleansing.
