If Alberta Separates Who Ends Up With The Money? Most of us will still be poor
"Alberta is the economic engine of Canada. We send billions to Ottawa and get back less than we put in. On our own, we'd be one of the richest places on earth." The core of that pitch is true. Alberta does generate enormous wealth. The oil sands produced a record 2.8 million barrels a day in 2024. Albertans do contribute more federally than comes back. This video doesn't pretend otherwise. It asks a different question. Rich for who? Because there's a difference between Alberta being rich and YOU being rich — between wealth being generated here and wealth staying here. Norway and Alberta are almost the same size. Both struck oil. Alberta struck it first. Norway's sovereign wealth fund is now worth about two trillion dollars. Alberta's Heritage Fund holds about $31.5 billion. Same resource. Sixty times the difference. This video follows the money — using figures from University of Calgary economists, tax researchers, labour economists, and the companies' own financial statements — to answer where the rest went. The short version: most of it already leaves. And separation wouldn't change that — because the machinery that decides who gets the money isn't controlled by Ottawa. Alberta sets its own royalty rates. That's provincial jurisdiction, written into the Constitution in 1982. The thing separatists blame Ottawa for is overwhelmingly a provincial choice. This is not an argument that oil companies are villains, and the video says so directly. Chapter 5 makes the honest counter-case: foreign ownership and shareholder returns are how public markets work, Canadian pension funds hold these shares, and low royalties genuinely did attract investment and jobs during the boom years. Royalty policy is a real tradeoff that reasonable people land on differently. You can disagree with every conclusion here and still want to know where the money goes.
