The Incredible Finale to Phantasy Star Online | PSO Episode 3

Though it wasn't the main focus of the game, the story of Phantasy Star Online at least felt conclusive after Episodes 1 and 2. But the release of Episode 3 changed that entirely, reopening old wounds and introducing a new generation of characters to the universe. The issue is, unlike the other two episodes, this game wasn't a multiplatform release and it swapped out the action RPG gameplay for a turn-based card game. Needless to say, the game didn't sell well, and it didn't stand the test of time like Episodes 1 and 2. That said, despite not getting many eyes on it, the story of Episode 3 added so much to the universe of Phantasy Star Online. The development of each character throughout the game, as well as the major events that move the story forward from the previous release, allow you to witness an incredible and complicated narrative be woven as you progress. Additionally, with the story being split into two opposing perspectives, different information is learned from each side which lead to the player slowly seeing the full picture. As someone who grew up with this game, I didn't fully understand the story until replaying it earlier this year. But I now walk away thinking of Episode 3 as an incredible addition to Phantasy Star Online, and one deserving more attention. My playthrough of the game used the fan-made "Episode 3 Plus" mod, which was designed around offline play. As someone who has played Episode 3 offline for dozens of hours, I believe this to be the optimal way to experience the singleplayer content.
