...So Who IS the Protagonist of Phantasy Star Online?

The idea of a canon "protagonist" in PSO is a bit of a silly concept, since the game keeps that intentionally vague so it's easier for the player to self-insert their own character. But the supplemental material for the game post-launch can be interpreted in a way to suggest there's more than just a single "player character" when you're going through the story. So... what's the established lore here? To be frank, there isn't any. So in lieu of that, I'd like to go through all the information in-and-out of the game and try to piece together the most likely scenario. Was it truly a single Hunter that accomplished every event in the game, or is it more reasonable to suggest it was handled by multiple Hunters? In the end, either can be true, but let's start digging and see what sounds the most reasonable.
