Ep. 249 Lagazuoi - Dolomites Italy - Cable Car up/2500ft down! #Lagazuoi #Dolomites #ItalyHiking

Join us as we explore one of the most remarkable hikes in the Italian Dolomites. Our adventure begins at the summit of Lagazuoi, reached by cable car from Passo Falzarego, before descending more than 2,500 feet (760 m) through one of the most historic landscapes in Europe. Along the way, we pass through restored First World War tunnels, descend dramatic switchbacks beneath towering limestone cliffs, and soak in some of the finest panoramic views in the Dolomites. Just when we thought the hard work was over, the trail had one final surprise—a 600-foot (180 m) climb back out to complete the hike! The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were once an ancient tropical sea. Over 250 million years ago, coral reefs and marine life formed the dolomite rock that now creates these spectacular peaks. At sunrise and sunset, the mountains glow pink and orange in the famous Enrosadira phenomenon. But Lagazuoi is more than just a beautiful mountain. During the First World War (1915–1917), this mountain became the front line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. Unable to defeat each other on the surface, both sides tunneled deep into the mountain, creating underground barracks, command posts, observation points, and mines packed with explosives. The restored tunnels you see in this video are part of one of the largest open-air First World War museums anywhere in the world, preserving the extraordinary story of soldiers who fought and lived high above the clouds. From the summit, standing at 2,778 metres (9,114 feet), the views stretch across many of the Dolomites’ most iconic peaks, including Marmolada, Tofane, Civetta and the Sella Group. It’s a place where breathtaking natural beauty and powerful history exist side by side. Whether you’re planning your own Dolomites adventure, interested in military history, or simply enjoy spectacular mountain scenery, this hike is one you won’t forget.
