The bizarre details of Netflix's new true crime documentary "Untold: The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill"

In Netflix' latest installment of the "Untold" documentary series, they explore the high-profile 2019 shooting between Olympic equestrian Michael Barisone and his student Lauren Kanarek. Tensions begin building between the two and spiral out of control in social media posts and calls made to police. It all culminates in Michael Barisone shooting Lauren Kanarek, who narrowly survived. But Barisone's defense team said Kanarek had driven him to the point of legal insanity and he did not remember committing the crime or shooting her due to being insane at the time. The prosecution said this was an intentional act of violence to try and kill Kanarek, but the jury bought the defense's claim and found Michael Barisone not guilty by reason of insanity. Once he was committed to a mental institution after that, they deemed him not insane and he was freed. Both Michael Barisone and Lauren Kanarek are interviewed in this true crime documentary about the case with very different perceptions of what happened at Hawthorne Hill. #truecrime #truecrimedocumentary #untold #netflix #netflixdocumentary #olympicequestrian #michaelbarisone #laurenkanarek #socialmedia #shooting #trial #insanitydefense #notguilty This segment was recorded live on 'True Crime AZ Live' episode that aired 4-21-26
