I, Farm Boy! Manok Pinoy, My Modest Contribution To Agriculture Marami pa siguro ang hindi nakaka-alam pero meron na akong masasabing personal ko na kontribusyon sa Philippine Farming and Agriculture. Ito ay ang bagong genetic strain ng Free-Range Chicken, Manok Pinoy, which I started developing in 2010 and continued to improve over the years. Manok Pinoy is now registered by the Intellectual Property Office as the brand name for the free-range chicken which has dual purpose - meat production and brown eggs. This started by accident in 2010 when my American friend, James Clem, Jr. of Klamath Falls, Oregon, sent me about 30 heads of American heritage chicken, including New Hampshire, Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Barred Rock and Black Australorp. During the long trip, however, namatay ang mga lalaki and I was left with the young hens pero walang magkakastang tandang. At about the same time, a Muslim friend, the late Datu Musim Mamintal, gifted me with a few heads of the huge Paraokan roosters which the Maguindanaos use for naked heel fighting. After testing their meat texture and taste, I decided to focus on just two breeds, the Plymouth Barred Rock and the Black Australorp. By crossing the three lines, I was able to produce predominantly black free-range fowls which proved to be good egg layers with excellent meat taste and long muscle strands. Mas malaman at mas masarap pa sa native chicken and I decided to perpetuate the genetic combination and called it Manok Pinoy, a breed which I hope would later be spread in rural areas of the country. I bred a lot of the breeding materials pero nag scale down kami ngayon because of the threat of the Bird Flu which had been reported in several areas in Mindanao. After this crisis, I hope to be able to establish better breeding facilities to produce healthy breeding materials na puedeng maipamahagi sa mga farming families all over the country.
