I, Farm Boy! 21 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD, STILL LEARNING EVERYDAY Twenty one years after I, along with my family, took a long drive from Los Angeles, California to Davis, Oklahoma to acquire my first trios of Greys to start gamefowl breeding, I still continue to learn new lessons everyday as a chicken farmer. Out of what I learned from gamefowl breeding, I ventured into the development of a new strain of chicken for meat and egg production, a new line which is now known as Manok Pinoy. It has been 11 years since I developed Manok Pinoy but I must humbly admit that I am far from perfecting the system of breeding and rearing this new strain. The most difficult part of chicken farming actually is during the hatching of the eggs and the rearing of the chicks until they are ready to be set in the free range where they are expected to grow and mature. Using incubators in hatching the eggs and brooders in rearing the chicks are major challenges because I try to imitate what hens do naturally. And nobody could really copy the wonders of Mother Nature. In the brooding phase, for example, I have tried all systems - ranging the chicks on day 1, placing them in brooders with rice hulls as litter and now, a more organized system where I keep the chicks in the brooders for 45 days before letting them loose in the field. The first phase involves keeping the chicks in a circular brooder made out of GI sheets for 15 days. This is where the first vaccination programs are made. After that, the chicks are transferred to an elevated brooder where there is more aeration where the rest of the vaccination regimens is completed. So far, it has been working well. I have produced three batches of about 3,000 chicks through this system with very minimal mortality. We will continue this system until we encounter another challenge. That is when we have to make another adjustment. But that is the beauty of farming. It is a continuing learning process and it never ends because there is no such thing as a perfect farming system.
