While studying at the Hwaeom Academy of Silsangsa Temple and Dongguk University Graduate School in Korea, Venerable Simgeun decided to study Tibetan Buddhist doctrines and traveled to Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama resides. Initially intending to study for two or three years, he embarked on a journey that has now lasted 15 years (as of 2024). His study of Tibetan Buddhism, which he began in his forties, is now approaching his sixtieth birthday. Venerable Simgeun says that his time studying Tibetan Buddhism has given him a new perspective on Buddhism. He describes it as "sweet." While he initially struggled with the language barrier, the constant discussion-based classes and the compassionate teachers have inspired him to rediscover the true meaning of Buddhist study and what we can learn from it.
