How Crap Were Video Games in 1982?
1982 was one of the strangest and most exciting years in the history of home computing. Before the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and BBC Micro took over the world, British living rooms were filled with machines like the ZX81, Acorn Atom, Video Genie, and TRS-80 — and the games on them were… well… pretty crap. But brilliantly crap. In this video, we dive into the blocky wars of early 1980s videogames and compare some of the era’s most primitive — yet groundbreaking — titles. From the ZX81’s monochrome mazes to the Acorn Atom’s pixel experiments, we look at the games people actually played in 1982, why they looked the way they did, and how these quirky machines paved the way for the 8-bit boom that followed. If you grew up in the UK during the early home computer explosion, this one’s a nostalgia blast. If you didn’t… prepare for some of the blockiest, weirdest games you’ve ever seen. Episode 40 of the FUN Retrogames Show your life has been missing. If your heart is stuck in your gaming past, welcome to our world! Retrogames started as the worlds first Retrogaming magazine way back in 1995, filled with reviews and analysis of rare games consoles and hard to find videogames. In 1998 our website became the first place you could buy console and computer games on the internet and in 1999 we launched our own London retro shop. Staggeringly it took another twenty years for us to finally launch our own YouTube channel. With over 30,000 games for sale it's always fun to browse on our website! Even better, if you want to sell your own games collection, then we would love to take a look and price what you have.
