Stockton-on-Tees Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in County Durham, and around three miles west of Middlesbrough, is the town of Stockton-on-Tees, often referred to as, simply, Stockton. The history of Stockton-on-Tees dates back to circa 1138 AD when the manor of Stockton was created. This was purchased by Bishop Pudsey of Durham in 1189, who transformed it from a village into a borough. In 1310 Bishop Bek of Durham granted Stockton-on-Tees a market charter, stating "to our town of Stockton a market upon every Wednesday for ever". The town grew into a small port, exporting wool and importing wine. Between 1644 and 1646 during the English Civil War, Stockton was occupied by the Scottish army. After the war, Stockton Castle was destroyed under orders from Oliver Cromwell. No known accurate depictions of the castle exist. In 1735 Stockton-on-Tees Town Hall was built on the High Street, where it stands to this day. The Industrial Revolution brought growth to Stockton which had already established a busy shipbuilding industry. The discovery of iron ore in the nearby hills led to the development of the iron and engineering industries in the town. In 1825 Stockton-on-Tees became a part of history with the birth of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. With the funding of Edward Pease from Darlington, George Stephenson's Locomotion Number One became the first steam locomotive to transport passengers on a public railway. In September of that year it carried passengers and freight from Shildon to Stockton via Darlington, thus providing a means of transporting coal from South Durham to the mouth of the Tees. This would transform Stockton from a quiet market town into an industrial centre, and with it, the population grew rapidly during the decades that followed. During the 20th century Stockton's manufacturing industries fell into decline. In 1924 the then future Prime Minister Harold Macmillan became Member of Parliament for Stockton-on-Tees - a position he held until 1945, albeit with a 2-year gap. He spoke out against the high rate of unemployment in the town in the 1930s. Half a century later, in 1984, he was made 1st Earl of Stockton. The town has since seen somewhat of a revival, particularly in the service industry, although the train station is unmanned and basic - something which may come as a disappointment to rail enthusiasts considering the town's history! 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
