Sabbath School Lesson Unity in Christ - Explained

Hours before His arrest, Jesus prayed one final prayer for His followers — and it wasn't for protection or comfort. It was for unity (John 17:20-21). In this Sabbath School study, we trace what the Bible actually says about unity in Christ, from the upper room to the book of Revelation, using original language, history, and archaeology to uncover a pattern most people miss. We start with Jesus's prayer in John 17 and why He called unity evidence for the world to weigh. Then we follow Paul from a Roman prison cell to the divided church at Ephesus, where he writes the seven "ones" of Ephesians 4:1-6 and uses the Greek word henotes — a unity to be guarded, not manufactured. We dig into Galatians 3:26-28, where Paul dismantles the three deepest divides of the ancient world — Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female — using the Greek heis, the numeral one. We trace unity back through Psalm 133 and the Hebrew word yachad, through Isaiah 56:7 and God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 12, into Acts 2 and the day of Pentecost, where Babel's scattering is reversed. We look at how the early church lived this out — sharing all things in common in Acts 2, and resolving the dispute over neglected widows in Acts 6. We explore Paul's body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 and the Greek word schisma, then uncover the archaeology behind Ephesians 2:14's "middle wall of separation" — the actual soreg wall in the Jerusalem temple, confirmed by inscriptions and the historian Josephus. We connect this to Colossians 3:11, where even the Scythians — the ancient world's furthest outsiders — are included in Christ. Finally, we look at Jesus's ongoing high priestly ministry in Hebrews 7:25, Paul's counsel on disputable matters in Romans 14, and what all of this means for your Sabbath School class, your family, and your church board this week.
