88 Morts sous la Glace, Zéro Coupable | Les Géants des Alpes contre l'Avenir — MEGA-DOC 2/2

On August 30, 1965, a block of ice broke off from the Allalin Glacier, above the Mattmark construction site. It hurtled down the slope. In a few seconds, it buried the workers' barracks. Eighty-eight men died under the ice. It was the greatest disaster in the history of European Alpine construction projects. The trial resulted in a general acquittal. No one was convicted. The disaster was officially classified as an unforeseeable natural event. The four giants presented in the first part do not operate in isolation. Linked by dozens of kilometers of underground tunnels and penstocks, they form the largest hydroelectric battery on the continent. When Europe sleeps, Switzerland pumps. When demand skyrockets, Switzerland generates electricity. This system stores the equivalent of 20% of Europe's electrical storage capacity each year. But the system is old. The concessions date back to the last century. Inspections reveal signs of wear and tear—like the Bieudron penstock that exploded in December 2000, killing three men and creating a twelve-meter crater in the mountain. And above all, the glaciers that feed the reservoirs are receding at an alarming rate. By 2100, according to the most recent scientific projections, most of Switzerland's glaciers will have disappeared. These concrete giants will have outlived the glaciers that justified their construction. This second episode tells the story of what the dams do, what they have cost in human lives—and the question that no one yet wants to ask out loud. ─────────────────────────────── ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — The Four Giants: A Closed System 1:00 — The Hydroelectric Battery: How Switzerland Stores Europe 7:40 — The Gietro 1818: When a Glacier Creates a Natural Dam 9:15 — Mauvoisin's Long Memory 10:30 — Mattmark 1965: 88 Deaths Under the Ice 13:15 — The Trial: General Acquittal 14:30 — The Bieudron Pipeline: 2000, a Deadly Rupture 19:00 — Swiss Glaciers in Retreat Accelerated 22:00 — The concessions of the last century are expiring 27:35 — Epilogue: The Age of Giants ────────────────────────────── 📍 LOCATION Swiss Alps (Valais and Ticino) Mattmark — Saas-Fee Valley (VS) — Altitude 2,197 m Grande Dixence — Val des Dix (VS) Mauvoisin — Val de Bagnes (VS) Bieudron — Rhône Valley (VS) ─────────────────────────────── 📚 SOURCES • Swiss Dams Committee — csb.ch • Historical Dictionary of Switzerland (HLS-DHS-DSS) — hls-dhs-dss.ch • Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) — admin.ch • RTS Archives — "Mattmark 1965" • EPFL — Studies on Alpine Glacial Retreat (2020–2024) • Swiss Federal Archives (bar.admin.ch) ─────────────────────────────── EPISODE 2:    • Video   ──────────────────────────────── 🗺 THE SUNDAY BRIEF Every Sunday: Switzerland's infrastructure and secrets revealed 👊 SUBSCRIBE for more revelations 👍 LIKE if this story resonated with you 🔗 SHARE this forgotten chapter of Swiss history 🎧 This podcast is perfect for listening to during your commute or while working out. 🎧 SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST: YouTube: / @swissculturedigest 📍 FOLLOW US: 📷 Instagram: / swissculturedigest 💼 LinkedIn: / swiss-culture-digest 🌐 Website: https://www.swissculturedigest.ch 📩 Newsletter and exclusive content: Sign up at swissculturedigest.ch © 2026 Swiss Culture Digest www.swissculturedigest.ch #Mattmark #Dams #Valais #Disaster #SwissHistory #SwissGlaciers #Hydropower #SwissInfrastructure #GrandeDixence #Mauvoisin #Bieudron #SwissAlps #Future #ClimateChange #HydraulicBattery #SwissDocumentary #TheSundayBrief #SwissCultureDigest
