The Volkswagen Beetle is the most produced automobile in history, produced without any changes to its basic design. A total of 21,529,464 units were produced, and the car was exported to 80 countries worldwide. It is better known to the general public by its nickname, the "Beetle." Initially, the car was endorsed by Adolf Hitler as a people's car for every German family, but sales really took off thanks to British Major Ivan Hirst, who saw the potential in an inexpensive and comfortable car. By 1955, nine years after production began, the one millionth Beetle rolled off the assembly line at the Wolfsburg plant, and Beetle production continued until 2003. As noted above, the car retained its basic design throughout this time: a rear-mounted, air-cooled boxer engine, simple suspension, and a recognizable, rounded silhouette. Incidentally, it was precisely because of its appearance that American journalists nicknamed the VW Käfer "the beetle."
