Buses on the Eastern Freeway during Peak Hour - Melbourne Transport [4K]

In this video we visit the Eastern Freeway to do some peak hour bus spotting. We visit two locations at Yarra Bend Boulevard and the footbridge in-between Abbotsford and Clifton Hill near the start of the freeway at Hoddle Street. The Eastern Freeway is 17.9km in length and links Hoddle Street & Alexander Parade on the west end with Springvale Road & Eastlink on the east end. The Freeway serves parts of Manningham; the only local government area in Melbourne not to have a railway line. This includes suburbs such as Bulleen, Doncaster, Donvale, and Templestowe. As a result the Eastern Freeway is a major public transport corridor that is served by 11 bus routes, the 302, 303, 304, 305, 309, 318, 350, and the Doncaster Area Rapid Transit (DART) Smartbus routes; 905, 906. 907 & 908. During peak hour buses can utilise the emergency lane to bypass slow-moving traffic. Given how busy the Eastern Freeway and the bus services are, there have been many proposals over the years to build a railway to Doncaster using the median of the Eastern Freeway. These plans never came to fruition. The Eastern Freeway is currently being widened as part of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades project, which will improve capacity of the freeway, especially once the North East Link between Bulleen and Greensborough is complete. As part of this project, Melbourne's first dedicated busway is being built alongside the Eastern Freeway between Doncaster Road and Hoddle Street. The busway will feature two bus stations. The Bulleen Park & Ride opened on the 30th April 2023, while the Doncaster Park & Ride is being rebuilt. The busway is set to open in 2028. I wanted to record this video to film buses on the Eastern Freeway before major construction on the widening works and the busway began.
