Respiration is mainly of two types, which depends on the presence or absence of oxygen: 1. Aerobic Respiration: This process takes place in the presence of oxygen. In this, glucose is completely broken down into energy, carbon dioxide and water. Where does it happen: It takes place in the mitochondria of the cell. Products: Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), water ($H_2O$) and a large amount of energy. Energy: About 38 ATP molecules are formed in this. Examples: Humans, animals, birds and most plants. 2. Anaerobic Respiration: This process takes place in the absence of oxygen. In this, glucose is not completely oxidised, hence energy is released in small quantity. Where it happens: It happens in the cytoplasm of the cell. Products: Ethyl alcohol ($C_2H_5OH$) is formed in yeast and lactic acid is formed in muscles. Energy: Only 2 ATP molecules are formed in this. Examples: Yeast, some bacteria and human muscles during intense exercise.
