Digestion is the biological process in which food is broken down into simpler, soluble, and absorbable substances that the body can use for energy, growth, and repair. The Digestive Process 1. Mouth Teeth chew food. Salivary glands secrete saliva. The enzyme amylase in saliva begins converting starch into sugar. 2. Pharynx and Esophagus Food is swallowed. Peristalsis in the esophagus propels food to the stomach. 3. Stomach Food is churned here. In gastric juice: HCl — creates an acidic medium and destroys bacteria. Pepsin — digests proteins. Mucus — protects the stomach wall. 4. Small Intestine This is the main site of digestion. Liver Produces bile juice. Breaks down fats into smaller particles. Pancreas Provides digestive enzymes: Trypsin—protein digestion Lipase—fat digestion Amylase—carbohydrate digestion Intestinal juice Completely breaks down food into simpler substances: Glucose Amino acids Fatty acids and glycerol 5. Absorption Villi on the walls of the small intestine absorb nutrients. 6. Large Intestine Water is absorbed. Remaining waste is excreted as feces. Importance of Digestion Provides energy to the body.
