German Aces Poured Cannon Fire Into A P-47 — Then Admitted No Fighter Could Take Damage Like It

German fighter pilots confronting the P-47 Thunderbolt discovered that destroying America’s massive fighter was often harder than expected. Luftwaffe aircraft armed with machine guns and 20mm cannons could tear holes through its wings, fuselage, and control surfaces—yet damaged Thunderbolts repeatedly returned to Allied airfields. The P-47’s survival came from its exceptionally strong construction and enormous air-cooled radial engine. Unlike a liquid-cooled engine, it did not depend on a vulnerable coolant system that could fail after a single damaging hit. Its large frame also contained redundant controls, rugged landing gear, armor protection, and enough structural strength to endure punishment that might destroy lighter fighters. Thunderbolt pilots learned to exploit these advantages in high-speed diving attacks, bomber escort missions, and dangerous low-level ground strikes. Even when struck by cannon shells or antiaircraft fire, many crews remained airborne long enough to escape enemy territory. This World War II documentary explores the P-47 Thunderbolt’s legendary durability, its battles against the Luftwaffe, and the engineering that helped bring wounded pilots home. Discover why the aircraft nicknamed the “Jug” became one of America’s toughest fighters—and why German pilots learned that hitting a Thunderbolt was not always enough to bring it down. #WorldWarII #WW2 #MilitaryHistory
