The 96 Hour Nightmare That Destroyed Germany's Elite Panzer Division
#PanzerLehr #OperationCobra #Normandy1944 In July 1944, one of Germany’s most prestigious armored formations stood directly in the path of America’s planned breakout from Normandy. Panzer Lehr had been created from instructors and demonstration troops drawn from Germany’s armored training schools, giving it an exceptional concentration of experienced personnel and mechanized equipment. But by July 25, weeks of fighting and constant Allied air attacks had already reduced the division’s strength. Then Operation Cobra began. More than 2,400 heavy bombers, medium bombers, and fighter-bombers struck the narrow German defensive zone west of Saint-Lô. Thousands of bombs buried positions, overturned vehicles, destroyed communications, and left surviving troops stunned or separated from their commanders. This detailed documentary follows General Fritz Bayerlein as he attempted to control a division whose telephone lines, radio antennas, command posts, infantry positions, and armored reserves had been torn apart. Although scattered German groups continued resisting from hedgerows and villages, Panzer Lehr could no longer operate as a coordinated armored formation. American infantry broke through the damaged defensive line, while armored columns exploited the gap and raced toward Coutances. Within approximately 96 hours, Bayerlein reported that his once-elite division had been effectively annihilated. The bombing also carried a tragic American cost. Bombs falling short killed more than one hundred U.S. soldiers, including Lieutenant General Lesley McNair. Through combat reports and commanders’ accounts, discover how Operation Cobra broke the Normandy stalemate and opened the road for the Allied advance across France.
