Your Scales Are Lying — What to Measure Instead
Your Scales Are Lying — What to Measure Instead | Dr David Stokes, GP Your weight can stay completely stable while your risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease quietly accelerates. For men over 40, the number on the scales is one of the least informative health metrics available. In this video, I explain what to measure instead — and why it takes less than 30 seconds. The measure is your waist circumference. Combined with a simple calculation I'll show you at the end of the video, it gives you a far more accurate picture of your metabolic health than your weight or BMI ever will. ───────────────────────────────────────── WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS ───────────────────────────────────────── ✔ Why visceral fat is fundamentally different from subcutaneous fat — and why location determines risk ✔ The portal vein mechanism: how visceral fat drives insulin resistance and worsens your lipid profile ✔ Metabolic syndrome — the five-criteria cluster that silently raises your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes ✔ How to measure your waist correctly (most people do this wrong) ✔ What your number means — and when to act ✔ A simple refinement that adjusts for your body size and is actually a stronger predictor of risk ✔ Five evidence-based interventions that specifically reduce visceral fat ✔ When to ask your GP for a metabolic health review ───────────────────────────────────────── WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE THRESHOLDS — MEN ───────────────────────────────────────── Below 94 cm .............. Lower risk 94–102 cm ................ Increased risk — take action Above 102 cm ............. High risk — see your GP Thresholds by ethnic group: White European: above 94 cm (increased), above 102 cm (high) South Asian: above 90 cm Chinese: above 90 cm Japanese: above 85 cm South & Central American: above 90 cm Black African / African Caribbean: above 94 cm (European proxy) Middle Eastern / Arab: above 94 cm (European proxy) ───────────────────────────────────────── WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE THRESHOLDS — WOMEN ───────────────────────────────────────── Below 80 cm .............. Lower risk 80–88 cm ................. Increased risk Above 88 cm .............. High risk ───────────────────────────────────────── WAIST-TO-HEIGHT RATIO — THE SIMPLE REFINEMENT ───────────────────────────────────────── Divide your waist (cm) by your height (cm). Ratio above 0.5 = increased cardiometabolic risk — regardless of ethnic background. The rule: keep your waist to less than half your height. Source: Ashwell M, Gunn P, Gibson S. Obesity Reviews 2012;13(3):275–86. ───────────────────────────────────────── BLOOD TESTS TO REQUEST FROM YOUR GP ───────────────────────────────────────── If your waist is above threshold, ask for: Fasting glucose and HbA1c (long-term blood sugar) Full fasting lipid profile (triglycerides, HDL, LDL) Blood pressure These four measurements, combined with your waist circumference, give a complete metabolic syndrome assessment. ───────────────────────────────────────── PRIVATE METABOLIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT ───────────────────────────────────────── If you want a more comprehensive review — including advanced markers such as fasting insulin, Lp(a), apolipoprotein B, and a structured metabolic programme — I offer private consultations at Goring Hall Hospital, Worthing, through Cambridge Medical Partners. 🔗 Book an appointment: cambridgemedicalpartners.com 📍 Cambridge Medical Partners, Worthing, West Sussex ───────────────────────────────────────── SOURCES ───────────────────────────────────────── Stefan N, Schick F, Häring HU.
