Nadia Boulanger - Three Pieces for Cello and Piano, arr. Slavin

Nadia Boulanger is one of the most influential pedagogues of the contemporary Western canon. Her pupil Aaron Copland remarked that she “knew everything there was to know about music; she knew the oldest and the latest music, pre-Bach and post-Stravinsky, and knew it cold. All technical know-how was at her fingertips.” She held a reputation for being harsh and demanding - another student Philip Glass described her as “pretty much in the range between intimidating and terrifying.” Famously critical of her own work, Boulanger said herself “If there is one thing I am sure of … it is that my music is useless.” I happen to disagree. Performed on March 20th, 2026 at Arizona State University's Katzin Concert Hall, to open my second recital as a candidate for the degree of Master of Music. I'm joined by Elizabeth Ritchie on piano.
