eNCA News Bite | Anti-immigration protests, 80,000 jobs lost and World Cup shocks | 30 June 2026
It’s Tuesday, 30 June, and this is News Bite (https://www.enca.com/news-bite-podcast) with Marcelle Gordon. Anti-illegal immigration protests (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories...) have taken place across South Africa on the deadline set by March and March for undocumented foreigners to leave the country. The biggest gathering was in Durban, where Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma addressed supporters, while in Pretoria, Sandile Dube said South Africa cannot shoulder Africa’s socio-economic burden. In Ekurhuleni, the Mabahambe National Civil Movement (https://www.enca.com/news/alleged-und...) said no foreign national should operate a spaza shop in Duduza township, with locals raising concerns about jobs and businesses. Law enforcement also monitored protests in KuGompo City, the Buffalo City Metro and Mdantsane, while in Cape Town, protesters met a silent church-led vigil outside St George’s Cathedra (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories...) l with “No to Xenophobia” and “No to Afrophobia”. Meanwhile, Malawian nationals remain stranded at a repatriation centre in Musina, some after nights on buses or on the ground. The jobs crisis behind much of the anger is also deepening. Stats SA says South Africa’s formal, non-agricultural economy shed 80,000 jobs (https://www.enca.com/news/formal-empl...) in three months, with losses driven by community services and trade. There is relief at the pumps, with fuel prices (https://www.enca.com/business-top-sto...) dropping from midnight. Petrol decreases by just over R2 per litre, diesel by more than R3 per litre, and paraffin by R5.23 cents a litre. Investigations continue into the shooting of Deputy Crime Intelligence Chief Feroz Khan, (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories...) who remains in critical condition after being shot in Houghton days before his scheduled Madlanga Commission testimony. In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and five co-accused (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories...) are expected to stand trial on 20 July on 25 charges, including attempted murder. The US Supreme Court is also due to rule on Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship. SPORT Morocco and Paraguay are the World Cup underdogs biting back, with Morocco stunning the Netherlands and Paraguay shocking Germany on penalties. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is reflecting on his legacy, (https://www.enca.com/sport-top-storie...) while the Springboks start their season against England. And finally, between protest placards, job losses, cheaper fuel and underdogs biting back, today’s News Bite (https://www.enca.com/news-bite-podcast) is giving pressure, prices and penalty chaos. That’s your News Bite (https://www.enca.com/news-bite-podcast) for 30 June. For more, visit eNCA.com (https://www.enca.com/) or watch eNCA on DStv Channel 403.
