The song was written by Morrissey and composed by Johnny Marr. Marr based the melody on his attempt to play the R&B song Handy Man by Jimmy Jones. John Porter produced the track and it features vocals by Morrissey guitars by Johnny Marr bass by Andy Rourke and drums by Mike Joyce with Paul Carrack providing piano and organ work. While Porter considered it one of the best songs on the album he later expressed dissatisfaction with the recording feeling it sounded sparse. Morrissey described the song as being about the loss of innocence and the idea that the soul remains childlike until one makes a physical commitment to another person. The line "I dreamt about you last night / And I fell out of bed twice" is taken directly from Shelagh Delaney’s 1958 play A Taste of Honey. At the time of its release the song faced accusations that it portrayed child abuse specifically due to the lyrics "of how you took a child and you made him old". Morrissey and the band consistently denied these claims asserting the song was about first love and the transition from childhood to adulthood. Initial Plans The song was originally intended to be The Smiths' second single but it was shelved in favor of "This Charming Man". Versions Beyond the album version an unreleased John Peel Session version was broadcast in May 1983 and various early mixes by original producer Troy Tate exist on unofficial releases. The title and several lyrics have also been interpreted as containing gay slang or homoerotic imagery. Cover Versions "Reel Around the Fountain" has been reimagined by several artists across different genres over the years. Here are some of the most notable cover versions.
